Recently I spoke at a bereavement group locally, I asked them what advice would they pass on to others - Here's their advice - with some thoughts under each tip they would want to share.
Acknowledge Your Resilience
You have managed more than you realise. Often, we underestimate our strength during tough times. Each day that you get out of bed and take even a small step is proof of your resilience. For instance, if you took a moment to appreciate a sunrise or enjoyed a small meal, that’s a victory.
Every emotion you experience is valid. Feelings of sadness, anger, and even joy are all part of grieving. Allow yourself to feel these emotions without guilt. Studies show that people who recognise their feelings during grief tend to cope better over time. Remember, your ability to endure this painful experience will help carry you forward.
Release the Pressure
Forget about rushing your healing process. Grief is deeply personal, and there is no set timeline for it. Give yourself permission to grieve at your own pace.
Instead of trying to conform to societal expectations of grief, accept your unique path. You might have days when everything feels heavy and days when you can smile. A survey found that 75% of grieving individuals experience emotions swinging wildly from one extreme to another, and that is perfectly normal. Allow yourself that grace.

Rest assured, normal days will return. The intensity of grief can be all-consuming, making it hard to imagine ever feeling normal again. However, with time, days will become less overwhelming.

Prioritise Self-Care
Caring for yourself is crucial during this time. Grieving takes a toll emotionally and physically, so make self-care a priority. Ensure you’re eating healthy meals, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep.
Designate time for self-care activities that help recharge your spirit. This might include taking leisurely walks, journaling your feelings, or enjoying a comforting bath. Caring for your mind and body can be a very grounding experience as you deal with a mix of emotions.
